INTERIOR DECORATING/HOME - Foyer Inspiration

Create a standout first impression, for yourself as well as for your guests, with your foyer or entryway!

5 Personal Foyer Favorites:

  • Settees (3 shown below) or other attention-worthy seating like the unexpected nook in Photo 2, a unique pair of chairs, or an eye-catching bench
  • A gorgeous yet utilitarian Chest of Drawers to store on-the-go necessities (umbrellas, scarves, tickets), entertaining supplies (candles, tableclothes, napkins); holiday or seasonal decor, gifts, etc.
  • Large wall-mounted Mirror (reflects the light, expands the space, & allows you to double check your hair/teeth/makeup/whatever if you so desire before heading out)
  • Bold Walls (through the paint color, wallpaper pattern, or artwork) Venture out with your walls, especially if you're working with a small space.
  • Delightful Details - Adding finishing touches like interesting light fixtures, floral arrangements, vases, throw pillows, rugs, and umbrella holders will give your foyer the extra finesse for a great first impression.

FASHION - Stella & Dot

At this point, you’ve probably heard about the ultra fashionable “boutique-style jewelry and accessories line”, Stella & Dot. Even if the name doesn’t ring a bell, I can almost guarantee that you’ve noticed some of their beautiful products gracing the pages of the latest fashion magazines and adorning your favorite celebs. Check out the Fall 2011 LOOKBOOK for even more of the latest styles not shown below!

Of course, it’s fantastic that the jewelry and accessories garner attention from trendy celebrities and high-end fashion experts like the editors at Vogue, especially since they sell for reasonable (very un-Vogue) prices.

However, Stella & Dot earns my support because it offers beautiful design, and even more importantly, “flexible entrepreneurial opportunities” for the everyday woman. Founded and managed by Jessica Herrin, a mother of two, Stella & Dot aims to provide a solution to the “modern woman’s dilemma: achieving success and balance through a career you love.” Many women have accomplished this goal by becoming Stella & Dot Independent Stylists (learn more) or hosting trunk shows (www.stelladot.com).

To give you a glimpse of the amazing women involved, I want to share a little about the two Independent Stylists I know on a personal level. Kristen Riek Haynes and Annie Wallace Byrd both grew up in my hometown of Midland, Texas. Kristen and I became friends through the local community theatre where she once played my older sister in A Christmas Carol. Annie, one of my sisters’ lifelong best friends, also acted as a big sister, offering plenty of piggy-back rides, Camp Longhorn wisdom, and playful doses of teasing. Now, all grown up, Kristen balances a busy life in Florida as a hardworking and loving wife, a stay-at-home mom of one with another on the way, and a working model/actress. Annie also maintains a demanding schedule as a 5th grade teacher, caring wife, and active volunteer.

If you want to purchase some of these gorgeous items (perfect for bridesmaid or holiday gifts), and you don’t already have an Independent Stylist, you can buy through Kristen or Annie’s pages: www.stelladot.com/kristenhaynes and www.stelladot.com/anniebyrd. Combining both style and substance, Stella & Dot just might add a little merriment to your jewelry box!

INTERIOR DECORATING/HOME - Dream Living Rooms

What does Living Room even mean? I would wager that most of us do a fair share of living in every room of the house. Growing up, we had three rooms that somewhat fit into the ambiguous ‘Living Room’ category –the Living Room, a very formal space with a baby grand piano, luxurious furniture, and a large tapestry; the Den, a more traditional, southern living room with built-in bookshelves, seating focused around the couch, a television, and a window seat; and the Playroom, a relaxed, brightly colored space where the family most frequently gathered to watch television, work on the computer or play foosball.

Regardless of the formality, though I prefer somewhere along the middle ground, true and authentic living is about embracing the people and things you love and incorporating them into your home. For example, both of my parents love music. My mother grew up taking piano lessons and singing in her church choir, and my musical theatre-singing father received a scholarship to play for his university’s marching band. So even our very formal living room embraces something that they both love with the piano as its focal point.

As I dream up my ideal living room, I find myself surrounded by rows and rows of books, family photographs, and comfortable pillows and throw blankets. My ideal room would be cozy and conversational yet visually engaging with interesting travel artifacts and other meaningful mementos seamlessly weaved into the décor. I would like to have some type of piano nearby (PHOTO 11), so my husband could share one of his favorite pastimes with the entire family.

Favorite Aspects of these Living Rooms:

PHOTO 1:  The ladder leading up to the bookshelf adds a sense of bookish charm that I love. I’m also drawn to the long blue curtains, the blue pillows, and the throw draped on the elegantly understated sofa. The garden stool as a side table is another great addition.

PHOTO 2: The crisp whites against the dark blue/navyish walls, the nautical circular window above the doorway (it reminds me of my childhood bedroom window); the large mirror above the fireplace

PHOTO 3: The color scheme, the green settee-like lounge piece (not sure its proper name), the mirror above the fireplace, the chandelier, the bookcase, the various seating areas; This room just intrigues me with its beautiful eccentricities.

PHOTO 4: The green chairs; what can I say? I’m a sucker for anything green.

PHOTO 5: The tall bookshelf, the yellow chairs, the interesting light fixture (it looks like the outdoor lighting at my childhood home); the black trunk used as the coffee table, and the other black chest of drawers with possibly travel/beach artifacts enclosed on top of it

PHOTO 6: The blue & white combination and the traditional southern feel

PHOTO 7: The color scheme, the gold mirrors, the black chair, the white vase, and how the rug ties the space together

PHOTO 8: Self-explanatory

PHOTO 9: Color of the walls, gold intricate mirror above the fireplace, interesting sofa, tall bookshelves and even more books in the next room

PHOTO 10: Green obsession (especially the striped floors), conversational seating arrangement, traditional with a cheerful punch (my favorite style)

PHOTO 11: U-shaped seating arrangement, green couch in background, piano in far background

PHOTO 12: Wall color, comfortable enough for the dog but with plenty of stylish details (curtains, lamp, pouf, chairs)

PHOTO 13: This room may have gone a little extreme with the sunny, cheerful yellow look, but sometimes, I can’t help myself.

Merriment Moment of the Week - Horns, Robots, & Black Bean Salsa

After my inspirational and comforting week in Texas, my return to California felt even more frenzied than usual. Readjusting to LA life always takes a few more days than the transition to Texas time (not so surprisingly, as I have lived in Texas my entire life until now). Let’s just say this week was a work-consumed, almost no time with my husband, bumpy arrival type of week. But even the thorniest of weeks has its fair share of merriments to smile about, and a glowing light at the end of the tunnel –the weekend! Keep that in mind on this Monday, whether marvelous, mundane, or maddening; there are still so many simplicities to celebrate!

UT-UCLA GAME...College Football/Tailgating Season!
Spending the entirety of Saturday & Sunday with my incredible husband, Evan was the perfect remedy to my bad week blues. We attended the UT-UCLA football game at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, and the victory was sweet! But, honestly, the entire experience is what made the day so sweet…the camaraderie of being surrounded by burnt orange, the excitement of running into UT sorority sisters and Midland friends, and the amusement of singing along to country songs about Texas at the Texas Exes tailgate. If horns can make you this happy, then Hook ‘Em!

ZOOB-BOT
In Dallas, we were able to celebrate the 6th Birthday of Evan’s amazing and adorable little brother, Ean. Since Ean loves to build things and kept mentioning ‘robots’ when we asked what he wanted for his birthday, we decided to buy him ZOOB-BOT by Infinitoy (purchased at Barnes & Noble, also found on Amazon).

If you’re looking for a birthday present, the ZOOB-BOT was definitely a hit. Inspired by Kids’ Submissions to the company’s Online Gallery, the ZOOB-BOT allows kids to actually play with their creations. They can build a nearly endless amount of robot creations by snapping the pieces together, and then the robot moves with its pullback motor and lights up from its eyes. No toy is perfect, but this one is inventive, entertaining, and less complicated than many of the available builder sets.

MODERN HOSPITALITY COOKBOOK BY MASTER CHEF WINNER, WHITNEY MILLER
Evan received this cookbook this week as a thank-you for helping out a fellow entertainment industry person. Always interested in Southern charm and hospitality, I immediately flipped through the entire book while in bed. The author, Whitney Miller, recently won Season 1 of Master Chef. While I had never heard of the show, I instantly became a fan of this kindhearted, delightful, and strong willed young woman. She brightened my day with her gratitude and optimism; mostly, she reminded me of my best friend, Ginny, who celebrated her birthday yesterday. Anyone with that much light and heart deserves major celebration! Plus, her modern takes on southern dishes look delicious.

THE NATE BERKUS SHOW IS BACK!
I adore The Nate Berkus Show. If you haven’t watched it yet, do yourself a favor and record it. You can learn so much about interior decorating and design in such a short period of time; I always approach the show as a student, and I receive so much inspiration from it. This week, Nate continued his House Proud segment with the most exciting reveal yet –his very own, new apartment in New York. Check it out!

I DON’T KNOW HOW SHE DOES IT, Directed by native Midlander Douglas McGrath
Evan and I enjoyed a Friday Date Night at the new movie, I Don’t Know How She Does It, starring Sarah Jessica Parker and directed by native Midlander Douglas McGrath. If you’re in the mood for a smart, entertaining, and sincere romantic comedy that will certainly boost your mood, then this is a great choice.  All of the actors won me over with their performances, but I especially enjoyed the supporting performances by Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) and Olivia Munn (Perfect Couples).

The fact that the Director, Douglas McGrath, grew up in my hometown, Midland, TX, attended the same private school, and took part in the same community theatre (my home away from home growing up) simply made an already enjoyable movie even more special.

HOMEMADE GOURMET – BLACK BEAN SALSA
This week, I made a delicious chicken with black bean salsa recipe that my mother taught me. Simple and spicy, it’s a great weeknight go-to! Plus, you can save the extra salsa and use it for a healthy chip dip while watching football over the weekend. I purchase the Black Bean Salsa mix from Homemade Gourmet.

Chicken with Black Bean Salsa Recipe
Chicken – I use chicken breasts.
Rotel (Mild) 3 cans – If you can’t find 3 cans of mild, I have had success with Original
Plastic Baking Bag
Black Bean Salsa Mix

1. In the morning, cover the salsa mix with 2 cans of Rotel. Cover and put in refrigerator.

2. Place chicken in baking bag and pour can of Rotel on Chicken; place chicken in refrigerator to marinate.

3. Bake chicken 350 for 1 hour.

4. Cut bag open and pull away from chicken. Pour salsa on top of chicken and heat in oven for 5 to 10 minutes.

WEDDINGS/EVENTS - Real Wedding: Connelly/Garza

Evan and I were so very honored to attend the wedding of our dear college friend, Eli Garza, and his luminous bride, Caitlin Connelly in Azle, Texas over Labor Day weekend. Moreover, Evan felt immensely fortunate to serve as a groomsman in the wedding, especially since Eli has more friends than any other person we know.

On several occasions, I walked with Eli through the UT campus from one class to the next. I had never witnessed anyone receive the bombardment of nonstop greetings that he warranted as we walked those few steps. I felt like I walking with a celebrity, except of course, Eli was humble, down-to-earth, and genuinely funny, characteristics typically absent in the famous. Everyone at UT knew and loved Eli, and his multitude of relationships still serves as a testament to his extraordinary warmth, generosity, and charm.

Eli was Evan’s Big Brother in their college fraternity/service organization, but he taught both of us so much, even how to perform a flip on the dance floor. So, when we heard that Eli was engaged, we knew that his bride must be equally extraordinary – overflowing with kindness, grace, and enthusiasm for life. After meeting Caitlin and witnessing their celebration, I can affirm that we were absolutely right!

Photos via Fall Meadow Photography & Design

The wedding was a beautiful breath of fresh air; worshipful, authentic and full of that enthusiasm for life that so defines the bride and groom. Sitting under a majestic Texas tree with the breeze brushing my forearms and the sweet music in the background, I could feel God’s presence in that place, his love all around us.

Wedding Planning Ideas From Eli & Caitlin’s Celebration:

  • Contemporary Worship Songs during Ceremony - Beautiful selections!
How He Loves by John Mark McMillan
Prepare the Way by Charlie Hall
All My Fountains by Chris Tomlin
    Spirit Fall by Chris Tomlin
    True Love by Phil Wickham
  • Celebration of Your Cultures & Families
I loved how Eli and Caitlin chose to honor their cultures and families throughout the celebration. The entire ceremony was delivered in both English and Spanish, and the couple stated, "I do" in both languages. As a Spanish speaker and lover of languages, I absolutely adored this element of the ceremony. The couple also served sopapillas alongside the wedding cake. They were both delicious and meaningful - definitely a crowd-pleaser!

  • Photo Booth/Lively Dance Floor
They kept the reception energetic and fun (just like them) by including a photo booth complete with dress-up accessories and encouraging a lively dance floor. After completing your photo booth session, the booth allowed you to include a personalized video message to the bride and groom. What a great keepsake for the couple!

  •  Lanterns! (always a personal favorite...)

  • Consider a Girl-Guy-Girl-Guy Attendant Arrangement
I really liked the girl-guy-girl-guy attendant arrangement during the ceremony. It was very visually pleasing. When they all turned and faced outward, it was the perfect, symmetrical picture. It's definitely something to consider!
